A septic tank rests underground, so you never get to really see it. However, there are times when you might have to do some work on your own for e.g. minor repairs of your aerator system or installation of a new one. Even if you think professionals are more suitable for the job, it would be useful for you to know how a septic tank parts and what the septic tank parts are. To simplify a septic tank system, you can split it into four important parts.

Septic Tank Parts

1.   The Drainage Pipeline

This is the main pipeline in which all the wastewater from the house collects and goes into the septic tank system. The wastewater is not only the water that comes from your bathroom, but also from your kitchen sink and washing area.

2.   The Septic Tank

This is the main component located just outside your house underground. It is a watertight container with a lid on top. The lid can be buried under the ground or raised when you have a riser installed. Within the tank the wastewater from your house is treated. The scum collects on top of the water whereas the sludge settles on the ground. Between the two there is clear water. An outlet pipe then takes water from the septic tank into the drainfield or distribution box.

3.   The Drainfield

Drainfields are located away from the house and make use of the soil to further treat the water from the septic tank. They are made of perforated pipes and there is gravel all around them. Evaporation and absorption both take place in this section at the same time.

4.   The Soil

Drainfield pipes are meant to release effluent onto the soil. The soil treats this effluent and gets rids of any harmful chemicals and bacteria found in the effluent. Only certain types of soils are used for this purpose due to their effectiveness.
