Our pets bring
us incredible amounts of joy, but sometimes they also bring us pretty big
messes as well. One of the side effects of living with animals in our homes is
that they can track in dirt, mud, and bugs, or have accidents on our carpets.
One of the most common issues dog owners will deal with at some point in their
lives is dog urine in the carpet.
Potent smelling
and staining, dog urine can be a nightmare to get out of a rug or carpet if you
don’t know what you’re doing. Chances are, once you discover the stain it’s
probably been sitting for a while. Whether you’re dog got scared or wasn’t able
to hold it, they are most likely to go into a corner to pee or go near a door.
This is because they know they aren’t supposed to urinate in the house and are
upset with themselves.
Once you find
the stain, try to soak up as much of it as possible if it’s still wet. Using
paper towels or a dry towel, firmly press into the stain using a gloved hand or
something disposable to absorb as much of the urine as possible out of the
carpet. This will make treating the stain easier.
Initially, use
white vinegar and water in a 50/50 solution. White vinegar is a very alkaline
solution, which can help to deodorize an area marked with dog urine. Dog urine
is so difficult to remove because it has organic enzymes that resist removal
through traditional methods. Vinegar helps to break down these enzymes, which
removes the odor.
Use enough of
the solution so that it soaks deep down into the carpet fibers by pouring it
onto the urine stain. Scrub the area with a scrubbing brush to work it deeply
into the fabric. Don’t be afraid to put muscle into it.
Press a paper
towel into the carpet to absorb the vinegar solution. Once the carpet is dry,
sprinkle some baking soda onto the stain. Then, you can mix ½ cup of 3%
hydrogen peroxide with a teaspoon of dish washing soap and apply it to the
stain. Then scrub it again.
If
this fails to clean the stain, contact a professional carpet cleaning company
who can use carpet cleaning tools
and strong detergents to fully remove the stain.
